Blacksmithing for Museums Class Projects

This intensive course will enable museum interpreters and administrators to enhance ironworking presentations at any living history venue. The core of this session will be spent teaching and practicing fundamental forging techniques. This activity will be layered with lecture and group discussions to present historical, logistical/administrative, and interpretive subjects. Topics to include:

 

-Introduction to Ironwork, an historical context.

-Competent skill presentations; skill preservation, matching the work to the interpreter's skill level.

-Fundamental forge skills.

-Combining forging fundamentals to create complex forms.

-Antique object study; determining construction processes for analysis and reproduction.

-Interpreting to all the senses.

-Logistics; safety, shop furnishing, and materials.

-Demonstration of advanced forging techniques by the instructor.

-Historical accuracy; it's the details!

 

Enrollment: 4 to 12

Minimum age: 16
