Tillers Instructor James Slining

Since first lighting the forge at Genesee Country Village in 1982, Jim Slining has dedicated his career to blacksmithing. After developing a blacksmithing program as Genesee Country Village's first full-time smith, he was accepted by Colonial Williamsburg's prestigious blacksmith apprenticeship program in 1988. Promoted to Journeyman, Jim continued working at Colonial Williamsburg until forming his own company in 1998. As owner of Foothill Trades, he continues to fashion 17th, 18th, and 19th century ironware for public and private restorations and collections nationwide. Throughout his career, Jim has taught courses for various blacksmith organizations and schools, as well as providing staff development classes at several historic sites. He currently resides with his family in the Shenandoah Valley, combining ironwork with various agricultural interests.
