Blacksmithing I

IMG_5925This is a great class for anyone interested in learning the basics of blacksmithing. It is a fast-paced introduction to blacksmithing which moves you through the fundamentals: basic hammer skills, heat treating, forge welding, and identification of “found” steels. It gives a foundation of experience on which to build with practice. With an anvil for each student, there is plenty of hands-on learning and superb coaching in this popular class. This is an excellent start for either a hobby or a new occupation. If you are easily bothered by dust and/or smoke, you may wish to bring a face mask. Product: chisel, ring, decorative hook, etc.

Student comments:

  • “Recently attended blacksmith 1 taught by John Sarge. My dad, brother-in-law and best friend had a great time. John imparts knowledge, history, and wisdom tempered by a subtle sense o humor. You will leave the class well fed with a better understanding of this art. You will also take home some nifty stuff you made yourself. A+++ .” -student, 2015
  • “Can you pack it up and move it to southern Indiana? Dear John Sarge: I came home, went straight over to my welding shop, re-did my forge, flue, and blower (Wow). I wouldn’t have known what to do (make the forge work right!), plus all the other things I’ve started changing, without this teaching of yours in such a short period of time. Thank you and keep on blessing others with your skill and knowledge. Thanks! ” -student, 2015
  • “John Sarge is an excellent instructor: patient, helpful, clear explanations and demonstrations – a wealth of knowledge and useful advice – friendly and low key.” -student, 2010
