Oxen Basics

It can take years to become a skilled ox drover but you can make significant headway by taking our Oxen Basics class. Spend a week learning the basics of driving and training oxen using both our trained teams and new calves. This is a class designed to not only teach you to be an ox drover but to teach oxen the basics.

This is a comprehensive class which will create skills in driving, training, and yoking through a sequence of hands-on experiences. Using our well-trained oxen teams responding to your voice commands, you will be able to fine-tune your skills. Learn how to select, team, and care for oxen. Using our low-stress training techniques, students will teach calves the basic commands. Drive teams hitched to various loads and practice by engaging in a variety of field tasks.

No budding ox drover is complete without a new yoke and the skills to make more. Try your hand at wood shop skills and learn how to shape your own small yoke (added charges for yokes more than 6” bow width). Make this the outstanding experience of your year!

Due to the many activities in the class, hours for the class are extended for days 2 through 5, generally starting around 8:30 and going past 5:30 pm.

Tillers has a scholarship available for people interested in learning more about draft animal farming which will pay for 60% of the tuition for draft animal farming classes. For more information, download the application here.
