Event Details

This six-day class is taught by an experienced timber-framer & builder, Chris Newman, and by a structural engineer with decades of experience, Tom Nehil. Both are members of the Timber Framers Guild. Students can expect to begin hands-on learning within a few hours of the first day of class. Tom will discuss design elements and Chris will guide you through using the square-rule layout system, boring and chiseling mortises, forming tenons, cutting knee braces, assembling bents, and plenty more.

EXPERIENCE: A minimal degree of comfort using tools would make your experience far more enjoyable and safe.

SAFETY: Protective eye wear and work boots are recommended. Parts of the class will be under a tent and parts of the class will be under the open sky come rain or shine so please prepare accordingly. Lunch is provided.

Chris has always been fascinated by how things are built. He discovered preservation carpentry when, in the early 90’s, he bought a home constructed in 1891 and has been involved in the construction trades since 1995. In 2000, he struck out on his own and discovered timber frame shortly thereafter. After taking an intro workshop in Colorado in 2001, he found the Timber Framers Guild and was hooked. Active as a volunteer for Guild projects since 2002, he hosted a Guild Project in his hometown of Vicksburg, MI in 2013 and has been a lead team member on numerous other projects both at home and abroad. He has been fortunate to work with some incredible companies on restoration projects ranging from simple barns to a double Burr Arch bridge in Missouri to a mass timber project in the heart of Chicago. He is currently a member of the Guild education committee and teaches the Timber Framing courses at Tillers International in Scotts, MI along with running Newman Carpentry and Construction. He lives in Vicksburg, Michigan with his wife and daughter and enjoys playing the occasional round of disc golf, live music, and helping with set construction for local theaters.
