This course is an introduction to wicker basketry tradition. At the end of the course, students will take home the skills to continue weaving many more baskets and an heirloom round bottom basket. The class will begin with an introduction to the seasonal process of harvesting, sorting, drying, soaking, and mellowing willow, and will move into slath-building, twining, and randing. Other topics covered include alternative plants for wicker basketry and possible variations in material preparation. Baskets will be finished with a handle in the style of the students’ choice.

Michael Marie is a Michigan-based fiber and funerary artisan. She weaves conventional baskets and also crafts caskets, burial trays, urns, and plant-dyed shrouds as more sustainable end-of-life options. She crafts with wild-tended and heirloom willow in addition to many other plants, including those commonly considered invasive species. She believes reestablishing relationships with these overabundant and controversial plant species can improve the health of our ecosystem, deepen our relationship with the living world, and make a lot of crafts more easily accessible.
