Create a dining or hallway bench 3′ to 4′ long using wedged tenon joinery. We will shape the legs and seat with traditional tools, shape stretchers on the wood lathe and assemble with the reliable wedged round tenon system. This two-day class is based on the traditional Welsh design used in chairmaking. A sturdy design that will be in use for many years. Beginner class.

Tom Hurst started his career in agriculture and forestry after growing up on small dairy farm. He spent 35 years teaching agriculture, environmental sciences and woodworking at levels from elementary to graduate students. He has helped to design and build multiple community shops. Making things from trees has always been a passion of his, and the home shop has been an integral part of his life since 1986. His woodworking focuses on the beauty and utility of everyday items: food-related items, furniture, and small watercraft. He is active in woodworking guilds in Michigan, teaches furniture design in an architecture program, and is involved in various programs around southwest Michigan. There are thousands of projects out there built under his tutelage. His mantra: “Let’s go make some stuff!”
