All sessions are scheduled on Thursdays from 10am – 12pm.

A parent or guardian must remain onsite for all sessions.

1 Sept. 17 Garden Foundations Explore the garden, learn about seasonal crops, soil health, harvesting, and preparing for fall.
2 Sept. 24 Working with Draft Animals I Meet the farm’s draft horses and donkeys, learn harnessing, grooming, and the history of animal-powered farming.
3 Oct. 1 Working with Draft Animals II Experience oxen at work through demonstrations and hands-on activities while learning teamwork between humans and animals.
4 Oct. 8 Blacksmithing I Learn basic forge safety and begin forging a pumpkin carving chisel.
5 Oct. 15 Blacksmithing II Finish shaping and heat-treating the carving chisel.
6 Oct. 22 Woodworking Craft and fit a custom wooden handle for your hand-forged chisel.
7 Oct. 29 Woodshop Project Build a bat house while learning about local wildlife, conservation, and safe tool use.
8 Nov. 5 Coppersmithing Learn about traditional metalworking techniques while creating a copper keepsake to take home.
9 Nov. 12 Basket Weaving I Learn the fundamentals of basket weaving and begin creating your own basket.
10 Nov. 19 Basket Weaving II Complete and finish your handmade basket to take home.

Description

This 10-week program will meet at Tillers every Thursday from 10am – 12pm. Cost is $25 per session + $5 materials fee.

This immersive homeschool program introduces students ages 10 and up to traditional trades, homesteading practices, and hands-on craftsmanship through weekly experiences led by knowledgeable instructors on the farm.

Students will explore the gardens, work alongside draft animals, learn the fundamentals of blacksmithing and woodworking, build a bat house, try their hand at coppersmithing, and finish the season by weaving their own basket from start to finish.

Every session emphasizes creativity, confidence, and practical skills while encouraging curiosity and problem-solving. Along the way, students will create several projects to take home and gain a deeper appreciation for traditional craftsmanship and sustainable living.
